PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING – QRNATIONAL COAL

CIRCULAR: 65-09 Ref: PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING – QRNATIONAL COAL

25 November 2009

Dear Traincrew

PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING – QRNATIONAL COAL

QRNational Coal advised that they will be conducting psychometric testing to all QR employees who apply for safety critical roles in QRNational Coal. This would include Tutor Drivers and Train Management Improvement Officer positions.

The AFULE objected to the proposal on the basis that Drivers and Tutor Drivers were already operating in safety critical roles and therefore are demonstrating their ability to perform their tasks and responsibilities in a safety critical environment.

In fact, out of the candidates who apply for trainee driver positions, only a third of the candidates pass the psychometric testing. The AFULE raised concerns with respect to what will occur if an employee does not meet the requirements of the psychometric testing and whether they will be allowed to return to their position.

QRNational Coal responded in a letter dated 16 November 2009:

“During our meeting, you raised concerns with respect to possible detriment to an existing employee’s employment should they ‘fail’ the assessment. QRNational Coal would like to advise you that should an employee not meet the assessment requirements of the role they have applied for, their employment with QR will not be in question as long as they are safely and competently undertaking their current role. QRNational Coal may implement a development plan to assist the employee and manage the risk associated to the required area of concern.”

This does not alleviate our concerns that an employee who undertakes a psychometric test as part of a recruitment process and fails to meet the requirements will not suffer adversely as a result. At the very least, an employee will have a development plan imposed on them.

The AFULE strongly advises members to be cautious of undertaking psychometric testing as part of a recruitment process and be aware of the possible consequences should they not meet the test requirements.

 Yours fraternally
